How it works

This is the journey our stories take

Community Reporters Collect Stories

Community Reporters are members of their respective community that volunteer to report on stories that affect them and their communities. The Community Reporters undergo a comprehensive training in journalism and development issues using a standard training curriculum developed by CEMCOD and DW Akademie.

The reporters use an android application to record audio, capture video and photographs and record audio which they send to the radio stations.

Radio Stations Moderate Stories

Stories submitted by the Community Reporters are moderated by the radio stations. Each radio station has mentors who oversee the work of the Community Reporters. They make sure that stories submitted are complete, good quality and meet journalism standards.

Publishing News Stories

Stories that pass the journalism standards of the radio stations are either aired on the radio station, published on the web or both so that they can be accessed by the general public, national media outlets, researchers and Non-Governmental Organizations.

Follow up stories

Community Reporters then follow-up on the status of stories with duty bearers. Where action has been taken about a reported news story, the community reporter provides an update on the same. In this way, the platform provides a feedback mechanism for ensuring that local development issues are addressed.

All the community reporters need is an android phone. The application is available on the Google Play Store.

You need to be affiliated to a radio station that is responsible for receiving and moderating your stories.

The app works offline. You can record your and script your stories offline but you'll need an internet connection to send the stories to the radio station.

There is no limit to the number of stories you can submit. However, we encourage you to submit stories that are of good quality and meet journalism standards.

Stories stay on the platform for as long as the radio station deems fit. The platform is a repository of stories that can be accessed by the general public, national media outlets, researchers and Non-Governmental Organizations.

Testimonials

What they are saying about us

All stories including the sound byte converge in one place which makes editing seamless and faster. We are able to receive the stories remotely eliminating the cost of transport and the time it would take for the reporter to travel from their village to the station.

Michela Muwanguzi

Mentor

I like that the app can work both online and offline, which allows me to collect and record stories in areas where there is no network and then later sync the app and automatically submit my stories with one click!.

Lilian Babirye

Community Reporter

I like the way the app is organized with the 5W+H arranged along the script where you type the story. The app also doesn’t allow you to go to the next step if you have forgotten a source allowing to submit balanced stories.
